ZAGREB, Croatia: Luka Modric said playing against England at Wembley in the opening leg of Euro 2020 was like a final at the start of the tournament.
The 35 -year -old Croatia captain led his country to the 2018 World Cup final after beating England in the semi -finals but did not expect to meet as early as Euro 2020.
England have made up for the World Cup defeat by beating Croatia 2-1 at Wembley in the Nations League, but Modric is aware that the upcoming action is more important.
The Real Madrid planner and former Tottenham player, who collected 137 and scored 17 goals for Croatia, said: “Our group at the Euros is very tough.
“England, the Czech Republic and Scotland are great teams and it is not easy to advance to the second round.
“I remain confident that Croatia can get through it even if it is difficult. The first game against England at Wembley is proof of that.
“It’s like a final because if it starts with a defeat it’s going to put you under pressure for the second game. We can’t make mistakes that day.”
If able to get past Group D, Modric is confident Croatia will be able to repeat what they achieved at the World Cup in Russia.
