RIO DE JANEIRO: Paris Saint Germain striker Neymar, who is also the world’s most expensive footballer, will not play for Brazil at the Tokyo Olympics but veteran Daniel Alves has joined the squad announced today.
Neymar’s team -mate at PSG, Marquinhos who awarded the gold medal in Rio five years ago is another name not on the list of coach Andre Jardine.
Former Barcelona star Alves, who is now with Sao Paulo, missed the ongoing Copa America due to a knee injury.
Jardine hopes that the experienced defender will be fit in time to face Germany who lost in the 2016 final, on July 22.
Two French -based players will also compete in Japan, namely Bruno Guimaraes from Lyon and Marseille’s newcomer Gerson.
